The Continuation…

This is the second match in the series. The first and very memorable one happened in 2022 https://www.jzmasterchess.com/experienced-vs-rising-stars-2022, during the time I was busy organising FIDE rated weekender and other events when there weren’t that many opportunities for junior players post covid era.

Now that there are more than enough tournaments everywhere for young players to get the experience, let’s focus on some worthy ones for special memory and making history for the future :)

During the first friendly match the Rising stars played respected opponents categorised as ‘baby boomers’, this time they will challenge the ‘Millennials’, all have their own stories to tell.

Experienced Team Bios

  • FIDE Master, born in 1987. FIDE peak rating: 2196,  ACF peak rating: 2298.

Jason works as a Mathematics Teacher at Baulkham Hills High School, taking the school teams to many finals, and they also represented the state in the Australian School Chess Championship in Adelaide in 2023.

2025 NSW Blitz Champion! Hobbies include tennis, table tennis, ten pin bowling, volleyball, go karting, travelling and many more..

Jilin: I first came to know Jason by playing multiple games against him in tournaments such as the Sydney International Open, Australian Championships and NSW Open. The impression was that the ‘amateur players’ in Sydney are very solid and we often end up drawing each other.

Later I got to know Jason better and invited him to coach my students sometimes. Through his sharing, we learnt he has been working hard in chess for a long time, training alongside high level chess friends such as GM Moulthun Ly (Youtube Channel) and IM Junta Ikeda. Their friendship and chess enthusiasm touch me and I’m sure it is also an inspiration for many young players.

  • FIDE Master, holds three IM norms, born in 1986. FIDE peak rating: 2371,  ACF peak rating: 2305

Work: Software Engineering (Tech lead)  Father of Alexander Rej.

Best Results: Australian Junior Champion in 2006, Scoring 6/9 in Oceania Zonal in 2009 and achieved double IM Norm. Hobby: Puzzle Rush:)

Jilin: I came to know Tomek more through Alexander participating in the Grand Prix. I can relate to a lot of the situations where he saw his son making ‘silly mistakes’ and tried not to panic (but sometimes failed). It is not easy for an established chess player to have their children compete in chess competitions, but they are learning and growing in the very special father and son relationship.

Tomek showed great support in my World Cup games and talking about the missed win just made my lost match felt a lot easier to take.

  • Born in 1984. FIDE peak rating: 2159, Peak ACF rating: 2217.

I am a National Arbiter and a long-time competitive chess player and having participated actively in tournaments for several decades. I’ve has coached many promising junior players across NSW, helping them develop both skill and confidence.

    Achievements and Interests

Early in my chess career, I won the Doeberl Cup Minor and Major sections twice. Outside of chess, my former hobbies included swimming and table tennis. I’ve always enjoyed working with computers and even studied Software Engineering at UTS, which sparked my interest in technology.

Jilin: My first impression of Arthur dates back to 2018, when he was one of the leading players at the Ryde–Eastwood Chess Club. He has always been friendly, sincere, and easy to work with. Living with Charles as flatmates gave us more opportunities to get to know each other, and Arthur has been part of many of our events and projects ever since.

Arthur has served as the Chief Arbiter of the Grand Prix Tournament since 2023. During this time, he has played a key role in the tournament’s growth and has been a strong supporter of junior players.

  • Born 1987. FIDE peak rating: 1792, Current ACF rating: 1937.
First FIDE rating: 1792 -  His FIDE rating doesn't change often as he runs tournaments more than he plays them.

National Arbiter from New Zealand. Has been living in Australia since 2007.

Bevan learnt chess from his father at age 3 and started competing at age 4, winning a few trophies. After moving to a new town at 8 years old he stopped playing chess until at age 18 he was looking for work and found a job as a chess coach. Since then he has taken up chess again and enjoys the competition, more than any other aspect of chess he enjoys arbiting tournaments.

Bevan is fond of games of all types and has a collection of over 100 board games at home. Recently he also took up competitive bridge and in November 2025 won NSW Novice Teams Championship with his partner and two other team members.

Jilin: The first time I met Bevan he was an arbiter who’s taking care of everything in the tournament. When I shared the idea of starting some series junior players tournaments, he showed great support. Bevan was the Chief Arbiter of GP in 2022 and also contributed to the idea of the grand prix scoring system by borrowing some past experience from other sports. It is safe to say that the JZMC Junior Grand Prix’s success is part of his success too.
